TRIGGER WARNING: cissexism, transmisogyny, sexual assault.

“Deciding to simply exclude trans women to make some cis women feel more comfortable is, in many ways, worse than patriarchal attacks on women because it’s one group of women deciding to “sacrifice” another group, doing the work of the patriarchy for it. I’ll give an example - at Pride London 2008, stewards took it upon themselves to exclude trans women from the female toilets in Trafalgar Square. THey did this the only way it really can be done - they decided to tell anyone they thought was a trans woman not to use those loos.

The upshot is that lots of trans women, who didn’t look like what the stewards expected trans women to look like used the loos anyway - I was one of them, and some cis women were, as I understood, turned away because they didn’t look sufficiently cis. However, the experiences of each group when challenged were different. I understand one butch dyke, when told to use the men’s, was let through after reacting angrily and even threatening physical violence. One trans woman, however, lacking the cis privilege to simply assert her gender identity and desperate for the toilet, went in the men’s toilet, where she was sexually assaulted.

When you exclude trans women from women’s spaces, be very clear that what you are doing is setting yourself up as the gender police, turning often vulnerable women away out of fear of a stereotype about who we are perpetuated by patriarchal society.

Exclusion of trans women is misogyny, and it hurts all women. Stop it.”

Sarah Brown in this F Word comment.

I love Sarah Brown. Despite being a Lib Dem, she’s also a really good politician.

Rules of a Whiteness-Free Discussion.

dumbthingswhitepplsay:

Based on today’s events, I’ve concluded that the guidelines that have been set out in your basic social justice 101 are indeed set in whiteness and leave little to no room for non-whiteness based discussion. I’ve constructed a list that amends a lot of the principles to be a little bit more open. The truth that is really meant to be conveyed here is that good and bad are not mutually exclusive and sometimes they both exist at the same time, and should be addressed as such. So far I’ve come up with this.

1) You can use any word that has been used against your group however you want.
2) If you are not a part of the group a word has been used against, talking to people the word IS used against, you better make a sincere as fuck effort to make sure everyone in the conversation is okay with that, otherwise you will probably end up as fair game.
3) If you trigger someone, give a genuine apology and just don’t use the word around them out of respect for them.
4) If you don’t like the language in a conversation you aren’t in, get the fuck over it. No one invited you to the conversation.
5) In a conversation about a group, if it has been clear the entire conversation that all relevant portions of the group are included and an individual statement is made that doesn’t have specific language addressing one portion of the group, get over it, seriously. Pretending you don’t realize you’re included after an entire conversation in which you were definitely included reeks of that white ME ME ME ME ME syndrome too many’a y’all have.
6) If you step into a conversation you aren’t in, talmabout erasure or whatever the fuck, well, you get what you get. You weren’t there for the whole convo and just like you wouldn’t step into a conversation in Korean if you don’t know a word of Korean and start talking about shit, don’t do it in a conversation you aren’t a part of. We will side-eye you and look at you like you funny.
7) You don’t get to use a word that has not been used against you in a group of people who it also hasn’t been used against.
8) Racial slurs should be considered off-limits if you are not part of the group. Permission may be given, by individual people who are part of that group, to use the word. In that case, the word should only be used in private around that individual. Certain other words, such as f****t and r****d should also be generally considered off-limits, but words may vary by location.
9) Being triggered by something doesn’t mean your reaction can’t be emotionally manipulative or oppressive. Being triggered is never an excuse to be an asshole. Being triggered doesn’t mean you aren’t oppressive or an asshole. Whether or not your trigger is taken into account depends on how much you fucked up, and how giving and kind the people you fucked up with are. Receiving considerations for triggers after you have been oppressive is a PRIVILEGE not a RIGHT.
10) In general, nothing should be compared to rape, slavery, the Holocaust, other marginalizations, etc. You may be given a pass to compare the two if you have experienced both/are part of both groups it addresses, since you are talking about your experiences. Under no circumstances should a person who is not a part of both groups argue with someone who is about their comparison. They understand both. You do not. Therefore, your experiences with one cannot trump their experiences with both. But, even if you are a part of both groups, others in both groups may NOT give you that pass.
11) Being triggered by “aggression” and “loudness”. This is tough and unfortunate. It’s also a personal problem.
12) Words like “aggressive”, “hostile”, and “rude” are in quotes because they vary from culture to culture and individual to individual and expecting someone to know your personal limit is ridiculous. In fact, you should expect that no one knows your personal limit, that people you don’t know very well may not remember your personal limit, and that your personal limit, if you are white, is probably unreasonable based on culture and race as well as severely biased.
13) Individuals can change, and sometimes mistakes are just mistakes. You do not have to forgive or forget, but disengaging at some point is a good idea depending on the offense. Following someone around to attack them on unrelated things 6+ months later is not cool. Popping in during a conversation months later where they have clearly changed their views to say “once they thought the opposite” is uncool. Hate them secretly forever in your own space, fine. Go to their door, unsolicited, repeatedly, to shit on them is awful.
14) A mistake only need be acknowledged if followed by a GOOD apology. A good apology acknowledges a personal wrong-doing and MAY include an explanation. Some explanations are better than others. Explanations based on cultural differences may be IMPORTANT even.
15) Problematic ideas should definitely be squashed.
16) You don’t ever have to understand anything.
17) Intent may not be magical all the time, but sometimes, it is.
18) Just because some things are absolute doesn’t mean everything is.
19) Just because some things depend on the circumstances doesn’t mean everything does.
20) If you are going to police the language aimed at groups you aren’t a part of, you should make sure that they aren’t a part of that group. You don’t get to like or dislike words that have nothing to do with you coming from people it does have to do with.
21) Some good points are good regardless of language. Some are not.
22) Sometimes it is okay to drop a conversation based on the language used. Sometimes it is not.
23) White privilege should never, ever be forgotten under any circumstances, during any discussion, and that is the only hard and fast rule I will give.
24) If you quote the dictionary, you may get punched in the face, and no one will feel bad. Just sayin’.
25) One’s education rarely has anything to do with a discussion on marginalization. It should never be used to tout one’s knowledge on marginalizations. Science and logic are biased and should be treated as all biases are treated.
26) Everyone already knows that not all Xs of a privileged group are Y. There is no need to bring it up except as a derailment tactic and all attempts to do so will be considered such. This does not apply to marginalized people who are notoriously grouped together as a way to exact privilege.

It comes down to who is the patient. Is the woman the patient, or is the fetus the patient? One or other is the patient. I’ve never heard a fetus talk to me. I’ve heard thousands and thousands of women share their pain, their desperation, and their hopelessness.

Can this be a thing that happens?

One thing you have to admire about Sims

keybladeninja11:

No prejudice at all on their part.

No Sim hates another because of weight. Or height. Or physical appearance. Or clothes. Ever.

No Sim hates a couple if they happen to be of different colours. Nor does anyone hate gay/lesbian relationships. Or straight.

We may put such things in our stories because in our world, such isn’t true. But the Sims themselves just don’t have that reaction.

But god FUCKING FORBID dat bitch steals a garden gnome, she is on the shit list FOREVER

Whovengers

Fury = The Doctor: Both look after their bands of misfits, and defend the Earth.
Tony = Jack: International/intergalactic playboys willing to die for the greater good. Many times over in Jack’s case.
Steve = Martha: Underdogs who became heroes, fighting tyrants for freedom and justice.
Bruce = Donna: Both forced to embrace a personality they didn’t want. The only difference is, Donna no longer remembers what it was like to be fully her.
Natasha = Amy: Both badass redheads with pasts they tend to run from.
Clint = Rory: Soldier types who always come as a package deal with their badass redhead.
Phil = Mickey: Both The Man In Havana, both eventually drawn to Big Fucking Guns.
Maria = River: The capable second-in-command.
Thor = Rose: Both channel godlike powers (that they had to prove themselves worthy of.) Also, both blonde.
Loki = The Master: These two would get on like a house on fire…no survivors.

All of them sitting in a circle crying because they’re not really the characters they play. Evans is dressed in a Captain America onesie; Hiddleston with bucket on his head with cardboard horns taped on top; and RDJ wrapped in aluminum foil with glitter on it and a light bulb in the middle of his chest.”

Ruffalo’s painted green and refuses to speak in full sentences; Renner’s hiding in one of the air vents and no one can get him to come down so they’ve given up for the moment; Hemsworth’s taken to carrying around a large mallet with the head painted grey.

Johansson keeps popping out of nowhere and shooting Nerf darts at Hiddleston’s bucket. Many are still stuck to it. She yells “BUDAPEST!” at random.

in regards to this article about Mitt Romney’s harassment of ‘different’ students in his highschool days I keep seeing on Yahoo

and why i dont think its appropriate to continuously call them ‘pranks’ and ‘hijinks’

“this high-school popularity was partly earned through pranks — like the forcible cutting of a closeted gay student’s hair — that had a cruel and sometimes homophobic tinge.”

Also, may I just add that “hijinks” sounds like just the sort of highfalutin’ word that Mitt Romney would use, just before saying something shitty like “boys will be boys”?
